Meet Martha Smith

Personal Investment Officer, Retail Banking

Have you met Martha?

A bank lobby — who'd have thought to find humor there? But a huge red banner was displayed that read "Have you met Martha?"

"I get a lot of teasing about it, but that sign has given tellers and managers a way to connect with our customers, open up conversation, and begin to build relationships with them. And it has certainly allowed me to meet lots of people," says Martha.

"One of my favorite groups of people is senior citizens. I love being with older people and working with them to achieve their goals. And Compass really encourages me to insert my personality into my position."

Such a little investment in time, such a big return in customer loyalty.

"I really care about our elderly customers. And they seem to appreciate the little extras I do for them. Sometimes it's as simple as walking with them to their cars or just lending an ear when they need to talk."

More than just an account number.

"I sincerely take an interest in my customers. I try once a month to purchase a birthday cake and take it to the retirement home where we have lots of customers. If I'm giving a presentation at one of the retirement homes, sometimes at the end of my talk I'll hand out a rose to each lady. It's a small gesture, but one that makes them feel special."

Silly signs, birthday cakes, and roses — some of the unexpected ways Martha reaches her customers. Unconventional banking? Certainly. Effective banking? Absolutely!
